Parent Training for the Ultra-Orthodox Community

A series of parent training sessions designed as a process-based workshop tailored to the unique needs of the Gur Hasidic community in the Neve Sharet neighborhood.

To reach a diverse audience of parents citywide and adapt to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we undertook a fascinating process of tailoring and refining the Salta program content for parents from the Gur Hasidic community. Most Salta workshops are usually held in community centers and led by a professional team of skilled instructors - predominantly women - whose expertise is closely aligned with the workshop content.

In collaboration with the Northeast Tel Aviv-Jaffa District and Urban95, we adapted an existing workshop to meet the needs and characteristics of the Gur Hasidic community as closely as possible, while also addressing the constraints of the COVID-19 lockdown period.

  • The workshops were led by Rabbi Avraham Segal, a well-known figure in the community, an educational consultant, and the director of the Segal-Kivunim Center. Prior to the workshop, Rabbi Segal worked closely with Dr. Dana Shai from the SEED Institute (Tel Aviv-Jaffa Academic College) and the Urban95 team to align educational approaches and ensure the content would be as effective as possible.
  • The workshop delivery method was adapted: Instead of a traditional series of in-person sessions at community centers, the content was pre-recorded and played weekly on the phone line of the local Talmud Torah.
  • Six sessions were selected in coordination with Rabbi Segal based on his deep understanding of the community’s needs. Topics included emotional communication, boundary-setting, and establishing authority.
  • The workshop was promoted by distributing flyers throughout the neighborhood, in kindergartens, the girls’ school, and the Talmud Torah.

Impact

  • The workshops provided targeted support for parents of toddlers during a challenging period of uncertainty and hardship (the COVID-19 lockdowns).
  • Engagement was high, with approximately 450 audio plays recorded in a neighborhood of just 234 families.
  • Participant feedback indicated high satisfaction and a demand for follow-up sessions. All respondents said they would highly recommend the workshop to their friends.
  • 89% of participants reported gaining practical new tools for parenting, and 84% said they felt more confident in their abilities as parents.
  • The feedback demonstrated significant absorption of the workshop content.

What we learned along the way

  • Community partnership as a key factor: Using the Talmud Torah’s phone line infrastructure to deliver the workshop ensured it was tailored to the target audience, strengthened its standing, and increased its visibility within the community.
  • The choice of a respected and well-regarded facilitator greatly enhanced the workshop’s effectiveness. This approach ensured that the language, content, examples, and connection to everyday parenting challenges were relevant and engaging. Feedback revealed that 95% of respondents rated the facilitator’s skills highly.
  • Professional preparation and guidance for the facilitator ensured alignment between the workshop’s messages and the content of the municipal Salta program.
  • Feedback collection via the Talmud Torah involved distributing and gathering forms from participants’ homes, a method that proved to be cumbersome and inefficient. We recommend considering telephone-based feedback to increase response rates.
